Tire thieves at it again, and this time police arrest one suspect red handed.
At around 3:30am Wednesday, police respond to four juveniles stealing rims and tires off a car at the Pine Tree Apartments near 104th & Hamilton Plaza. Officers catch a 17-year-old who admits to the theft, while the others get away.
"When it comes to rims and tires, you're basically taking their car from them. They need their tires, they need their rims and tires to get around and what not,” said neighbor Robert Wright.
The theft is familiar in west Omaha, after a string of wheel thefts in June and July. Many happened near 172nd & Q St. Those vehicles were left on blocks. Last week, Omaha police arrested 22-year-old Thomas Leuck. He’s still at the Douglas County Jail being held on $150,000 bond for about a dozen felonies. They do not believe Wednesday's stolen wheel case is related to the previous ones involving Leuck.
One victim in that case is glad police are making arrests, but suggests it's an easy way for kids to make a dishonest buck. Wright agrees.
"It shows that there's a lot more people than just him. The police are going to have their hands full," Wright explained.
The juvenile detained Wednesday morning for the rim and tire theft was taken to the Douglas County Youth Center. The police report indicates that the 3 other juveniles have been identified, but not arrested.
