OMAHA, NE – Fans were already celebrating Friday ahead of the Husker season opener. As final preparations were made inside Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Aksel Nelsen spent his lunch hour grilling burgers. It’s a tradition for Nelsen each Friday before a home game. Nothing stops it--not even weather.
“You know when it's a 100 degrees, it's about 150 right here,” Nelsen said pointing at a grill filled with burgers. “It's a great atmosphere down here. Even the day before, people come down and we've got a big line of people waiting for hamburgers coming off the grill,” he said.
People all over town spent the day prepping for the game. Some shopped, others walked around Memorial Stadium.
“Even around town it's just always busy, everybody's always just getting ready for the games, and it's a blast,” said Lori Bristol who spent her lunch hour near the stadium.
“Everybody is excited. People are always friendly here anyways. But they become a little friendlier and a little more energized. They’re just ready to go,” said Alyson Stephens as she shopped for the latest Husker gear for her family.
More than 90,000 fans are expected to fill the newly expanded Memorial Stadium Saturday. More seats this year also means the game should set new attendance records.
“There are always people down here getting their tailgates ready on Friday the day before. It's certainly a great vibe. And game days are awesome down here,” Nelsen said.
The fan power will put plenty of heat on the competition. Nelsen said he’ll cook even more burgers Saturday for the fans who tailgate, and those who can’t get in to the sold-out game.
