Woodbine, IA - A fire started in the back of a flower shop Thursday afternoon and quickly spread to buildings on Walker Street.
First responders from 14 separate agencies responded to the blaze. Woodbine Mayor Bill Hutcheson said Thursday evening that the fire was under control. Two buildings that housed the flower shop were completely destroyed and several others were damaged. Crews spent the evening putting out hot spots and assessing the neighboring structures in downtown Woodbine.
One fire fighter was taken to a local hospital, Hutcheson said. Several neighbors also pitched in to help truck water in, though city officials said the water supply was never in danger of running low.
The streets around the burned out buildings remained closed Thursday night while volunteer fire crews continued spraying hot spots from large ladder trucks suspended over the street. Hutcheson said they would work well into the night.
The fire happened just days before the popular Apple Festival held each fall. Organizers said the festival would go on.
