OMAHA, NE – Douglas County authorities are asking for help finding a suspect they say attempted to kidnap a child in Brookhaven Park Saturday evening. Lieutenant Mark Gentile said sheriff’s deputies were called to the park at 5:15 Saturday after a mother said a woman walked up asked to hold her child. When she said no, the woman allegedly took her 2 year-old boy off the slide.
“To first have someone approach you that you don't know, ask if they can hold your child, and then five minutes later they're running off with your child. That's very alarming,” said Lt. Gentile. “They're taking your kid. You better take action, because who knows what they'll do to your child.”
The mother was too shaken to go on camera Monday, but told Action 3 News she grabbed her child out of the woman’s arm and punched her before taking her 2 year-old and 1 year-old out of the park and calling police.
Parents in Brookhaven Park were surprised to hear about the attempted kidnapping.
“Your kids are here all the time, and you watch them, but to have someone approach you and ask you that question is pretty hard,” said Kim Hasenkamp who lives in the neighborhood and said it’s very safe.
Authorities urged neighbors to be alert for any suspicious activity, saying one man told the mother a woman matching a similar description attempted to abduct his daughter from Brookhaven Park earlier in the week.
The suspect is between 18 and 25 years old, five feet two inches with a medium to heavy build and dark auburn hair. Anyone with information is asked to call the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
