Deadly Tornadoes Touch Down; Town is nearly destroyed
Pilger, Ne- Dual Tornadoes touch down ripping apart the town of Pilger and surrounding counties on Monday.
Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger says 50 to 75 percent of Pilger was destroyed.
The National Weather Service said the two twisters touched down within roughly a mile of each other. Emergency crews and residents spent the evening sifting through demolished homes and businesses in the community of about 350.
A team of six Nebraska Emergency Management Agency staff members are expected in Pilger to provide support to the local response
A 5-year-old also died from injuries suffered Monday. Unger says the victim was pronounced dead on arrival at a Norfolk hospital. Her name hasn't been released.
Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman has declared a state of emergency, he is expected to tour the damage this morning.
