Cause of Downtown Woodbine Fire Still Unknown

CREATED Sep. 30, 2013

Woodbine, IA -- Four days after a fire destroyed buildings in downtown Woodbine, Iowa the cleanup continues.

Fire officials still haven't determined what caused the fire that started in the back of the downtown flower shop Thursday afternoon.  The two buildings that housed the flower shop were total losses, and other neighboring buildings were also damaged.  The city administrator hopes to keep the front facades intact as the damage is still assessed.  The fire started at the back of the flower shop.  Fourteen surrounding fire departments helped put out the blaze.

The community came together to help those in need.  Citizens were pulling items out of the neighboring businesses so it wouldn't damage them if the fire spread.  One owner said about 100 people helped her get everything out in 20 minutes.

"It was very amazing, it almost made you start crying because it was super good," said Denise Davie, Owner of Denise’s Designs & Upholstery.

The Senior Center, which had mostly smoke and water damaged, has already relocated.  The Corn Palace Tavern, which had structural damage, hopes to relocate soon.  It's unclear what will happen with the flower shop right now.

Fire officials hope to determine the cause of the fire within the next few days.
