Burglary and hit and run lands two men in jail
Omaha, NE - An area of town volunteers cleaned up yesterday during "Brush Up Nebraska", www.kmtv.com/news/local/Paint-A-Thon-and-Brush-Up-Nebraska-A-success-for-neighborhoods-220107941.html was surrounded by police activity Sunday morning.
Around 9 a.m., police were called to the area of 37th and Crownpoint Avenue to investigate a burglary in progress. When officers arrived, they witnessed one suspect fleeing the area, that's when police officers attempted a traffic stop.
The suspect then crashed his car into the police cruiser. Police say 47-year old Thomas Lewis ran out of the car and 41-year old Cortez Johnson sped away in the car. Johnson didn't get very far, he crashed into another car and two mailboxes near 46th and Kansas. Then, Johnson exited the car while it was still moving.
The car rolled into the residence near 47th and Kansas. Officers created a perimeter and were able to locate and take Johnson into custody with the help of a K-9 unit.
Police booked Johnson for burglary, four counts of leaving the scene of a property damage accident, felony flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, operating a vehicle while under the influence of narcotics and operating during suspension, along with six misdemeanor warrants.
