Omaha Firefighter on Paid Leave following Traffic Stop

By Michael Crowley. CREATED Oct 29, 2013

Omaha, NE – An Omaha firefighter is on paid administrative leave following a traffic stop on Monday.
Battalion Chief Tim McCaw says the firefighter was headed from one fire station to another. He was ticketed for negligent driving near 168th and Q, just before 9 a.m.

McCaw says the firefighter was picking up a shift, which is standard. “I hold our firefighters to high standards,” said Interim Fire Chief Kanger. “I will investigate this and all matters that come to my attention, and if any misconduct did occur, I will address it and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if warranted.”

The Omaha Fire Department will conduct an internal investigation since the firefighter was on duty.

The firefighter is considered a “candidate” and is completing a probationary period with the Omaha Fire Department.

Tuesday night, Mayor Jean Stothert released a statement saying, “I will work with Interim Chief Bernie Kanger to ensure a complete investigation. Misconduct will not be tolerated…”
