Police Arrest Boyfriend in Death of Teen

Omaha, NE - Police have arrested 19-year-old Mikael Loyd in the death of 19-year-old Melissa Rodriguez of Omaha. Someone found the body of Rodriguez in a freshly dug grave Thursday morning.
Police originally took Loyd into custody for a misdemeanor assault, an incident stemming back to June when he allegedly assaulted Rodriguez.
August 7, one week before her death, court documents show an arrest warrant was issued for Rodriguez's boyfriend, Mikael Loyd for an assault and battery that took place June 11.
Police were called to Melissa's house after Loyd grabbed her arms. When police arrived, they noticed bruising to her arms and legs. Melissa did not say the bruising was a result of the alleged assault. At that time, no charges were filed.
The family expressed their concern for their daughter and feared for their her safety. According to court documents, Melissa's mother, Angie, told police Loyd had taken he daughters phone and that she was afraid of Loyd.
Melissa studied law at UNO and UNL, she was learning how to fight for justice. She was murdered before she got the chance to help others, now her family hopes her killer will face justice. Her family declined to comment on Melissa's relationship with Loyd.
