Witnesses Help Rescue Family From Burning Car

Council Bluffs, IA -- It was a fiery show and a fireworks finale as an SUV explodes on I-29, but the story does not end there.
The driver, Jason Werklund, his two kids and a friend were headed down the interstate when things took a dramatic turn.
The car flipped, burst into flames, and witnesses sprang into action.
"The Lord was with us," said Werklund after the accident. "We literally had angles on us."
Around 12:30 p.m., Werklund was driving his two kids and their friend to the pool.
He was headed down a narrow portion of I-29 near the Ameristar Casino, where construction is underway.
"My left tires caught that deep drop off over here where there is no shoulder, and then once I tried to correct it, it brought me back onto the lane and spun, and hit the embankment," said Werklund.
Jeff Mogensen was driving to Kansas City when he spotted the overturned SUV.
"The gentleman hadn't even got out of the vehicle at that time," said Mogensen. "He was just starting to come out, so we parked our car. I ran up the hill."
Werklund talked about trying to get out of the car.
"I think I was standing partially on my steering wheel," he said. "I exited out. I waved at a few people. Some cars started pulling over, and then immediately I had people coming over and assisting, even with danger around. They were not afraid to help save my life or my kids lives."
Mogensen started pulling the kids out of the car.
"I'm just really happy to get those kids and family out of that vehicle," he said.
Werklund and his kids were obviously shaken up, but no one was hurt.
They were all wearing their seat belts.
