Omaha, NE - For the first time, Chrishaun Moten's family is speaking out. His aunt, Nichelle, sits down with Action 3 News to share her message.
Thoughtful and caring, a few words his family used to describe a kid who was excited about life. Chrishaun's song's will echo in the memories of many.
"He was my first child without being my child, I loved him to death." Nichelle Moten chokes back tears as reality hits, just two days after her nephew died in a car crash. "I feel like the world has been cheated because he is not here anymore," says Nichelle.
A young life taken too soon by a man who should have never been behind the wheel. While Chrishaun's family looks for ways to heal, they pray Hilberto Ramirez, the man responsible, gets help of his own. "I can't let his memory die with hatred in my heart for someone who took him, because he didn't take him from my heart, he's still in my heart and nobody can take that from me," cries his aunt.
At six feet tall, Chrishaun will be remembered as a gentle giant. His family is getting an overwhelming amount of support from his friends and the community. The day after his death, his high school, Lewis Central held a memorial. It was there, his family saw how many lives the 17-year old touched. "I loved sharing him with the world I just didn't want to, I wanted to keep him to myself," says Nichelle.
When the days get tough for the Moten's, Chrishaun's own words will get them through. "his voice was angelic and I can hear him, I can hear him singing."
Chrishaun's wake is planned for July 10th, his funeral is the 11th at the Hoy Kilnoski funeral home. All of his friends are invited to attend.
