OMAHA -A former middle school teacher is headed to prison after being convicted of having an inappropriate relationship with a former student. A judge sentenced former teacher Shad Knutson to 9-14 years in prison on Wednesday.
Knutson was found guilty of having an inappropriate relationship with a teen, while he taught social studies at Nathan Hale Middle School. Prosecutors say he texted or called the girl more than 26,000 times. He was found not guilty of misconduct with three other former students by a jury.
“We're satisfied with the verdict obviously and satisfied with the sentence," said Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine. “Certainly there's emotions whenever you have a case like this, but he was convicted of being a child predator and that's what he is."
Knutson’s attorney, Tom Reilly, argued that the sentence was too harsh, and his client’s life had been ruined and his career was over, which was “more than enough”.
Before handing down the sentence, Judge Duane Dougherty said, “What’s very disturbing to me is when a teacher takes advantage of their position to take advantage of a minor child for their own gratification. Any teacher would think this is horrible what you did.”
Judge Dougherty added that Knutson didn’t admit to his probation officer that he did anything wrong.
He will be eligible for parole in 6 years and be required to register as a sex offender for 25 years. Knutson’s attorney has appealed the sentence with the judge.
