Former Douglas County Deputy Booked on Sexual Assault Charges

CREATED Jun. 10, 2013

Omaha, NE - A former Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy has been charged with first degree sexual assault.

Fired Deputy Cory Cooper turned himself in to Douglas County Corrections officials Monday.

The Douglas County Sheriff fired Cooper last month, after five years with the department, for inappropriate behavior.

Omaha police are investigating claims that Cooper sexually assaulted women while on the job.

In February, a 19 year old woman made complaints that Cooper sexually assaulted her while he was in uniform at Zorinski Lake.

Cooper did not file an appeal for his firing.

The Douglas County Sheriff said Monday, "His conduct was shocking and the sheriff's office fully supports his arrest.  Law enforcement officers are here to protect the public, not prey on them."

In court Monday afternoon Cooper waived his preliminary hearing. A judge set his bond at $250,000.

Cooper could face anywhere from 1 to 50 years behind bars.
