Raw Sewage Spilled Into Missouri
CREATED May. 31, 2013
Omaha, NE - An estimated 50 gallons a minute for six hours of raw untreated sewage leaked into the Missouri river from a broken sewer pipe.
Omaha public works crews found the leak around 8:30 Friday morning. The pipe is just south of the I-480 bridge. It's had a lot of issues over the years. The pipe is old, and public works says heavy rains this week likely caused excess pressure leading it to burst.
Even though the crack is not very big, only one by two inches, the fix is far more expensive than most.
Public works stopped the leak around 2:30 Friday afternoon. They say people should not wade or swim in the water for several miles downstream of the I-480 area.
