Omaha, NE - An early morning shooting on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge has now turned into a homicide investigation. Wednesday afternoon, police said victim Shamari Richards, age 26, died from his injuries.
The other victims, Kevin Jenkins and Jeremy Fejeran, are expected to survive. Police have not released any other details about the shooting, only that they responded to the bridge just before 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday to investigate a report of shots fired. It appears there was a disturbance before the shooting.
Richards' family says he had previously been in trouble with the law, but had turned in a better direction. They are struggling with his death, and how they're going to tell his 5-year-old daughter.
"It broke my heart because I never expected that I'm going to have to bury my son. I thought I would be leaving before him, but I do understand that in Omaha, Nebraska these kids are way too out of control. Out of control, and they need to stop it, they need to put the gun down," said Shamari's mother, Lorraine Richards.
Police towed two vehicles from a small parking area off of the bridge. No suspects have been identified, but authorities say two people were arrested at the scene for outstanding warrants.
