Douglas County Deputy Fired
Douglas County, NE - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says a deputy has been terminated.
On Monday, Deputy Cory Cooper was fired for violations of the department’s rules and regulations. The sheriff's office would not elaborate, only saying it relates to code of conduct. The department's investigation into deputy Cooper began sometime in February. He was relieved of duty on April 19; the termination came down on Monday.
The department said Cooper had a pattern of inappropriate behavior in the first four months of 2013, while on duty and in the capacity of a law enforcement officer.
The Omaha Police Department confirmed that they are investigating a possible sexual assault involving Cooper at an Omaha park. KMTV Action 3 News has learned a woman alleges Cooper made sexual advances towards her at Lake Zorinsky several weeks ago. She and a male friend were in a car parked at the lake when former Deputy Cooper approached. The couple had marijuana in the vehicle, so Cooper reportedly told the man to go get rid of the marijuana in the lake. When the woman was alone, Cooper allegedly made sexual advances toward the woman.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Department confirms Cooper was fired for "a pattern of behavior" that was reported involving his interactions with women.
He was a deputy for 5 years with Douglas County. After training, he was assigned to security at the Douglas County Courthouse. HE had been on patrol since July 2012.
Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine has been notified of the situation.
