Omaha, NE -- She was supposed to be a trusted employee, now she's accused of stealing thousands of dollars from vulnerable adults. Investigators say 41-year-old Shawna Reed stole from patients at the Telecare Recovery Center at Sarpy located in Bellevue, which gives helps people with mental illnesses.
Prosecutors charged Reed with 3 counts of Felony Abuse of a Vulnerable Adult in Douglas County. Authorities say she stole the government assistance debit cards from at least 3 residents, and either knew their pin numbers or created her own. She used the cards at 5 Omaha ATM’s in December and early January. Reed allegedly made 12 withdrawals totaling more than $4,000.
Syliva Graffeo's son Walter has been staying at the Recovery Center at Sarpy for about 9 months. He was identified as one of the victims.
"Flabbergasted. It's unbelievable that somebody could take, they get so little money in the first place to survive and then to have somebody steal from them when they're gainfully employed, it’s appalling," Graffeo explained.
Reed is also wanted on Theft charges in Sarpy County stemming from this case. Douglas County Judge Darryl Lowe set reed’s bond at $15,000 on Thursday.
"They're there to help the person but they're not helping, they're keeping him down,” Graffeo described. "It's disgusting that somebody with that much authority over another person could do this."
