Iowa ACLU Defends Westboro Baptist Church
Des Moines, IA - The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa filed a class action lawsuit Thursday, supporting three members of the Westboro Baptist Church.
The ACLU says legal action is necessary to allow church members to continue to demonstrate in Iowa. The Westboro Baptist Church often stages protests at funeral services for U.S. servicemen and women killed in the line of duty.
The lawsuit contends law enforcement agencies in Council Bluffs, Red Oak and Des Moines have wrongly ordered church members to stop dragging and spitting on the U.S. flag during protests.
ACLU of Iowa Executive Director Ben Stone says, " The strength of our democracy requires tolerance of peaceful forms of public expression and religious activities".
The ACLU says Iowa's flag desecration law is still on the books, even though an Iowa judge ruled it unconstitutional in 2007
