Some are small and some are tall. They're an unusual assortment of dogs seized from a North Omaha home.
"These people were advertising dogs for sale on Craigslist."
The Nebraska Humane Society caught wind of an, out of the ordinary operation. After getting several calls from concerned "customers", they began to investigate.
NHS learned a group of people put ads on Craigslist to sell dogs. While that's perfectly legal, the sellers would meet their customers in random North Omaha parking lots and demand more money.
Executive Director of NHS Mark Langan says that is unusual.
"These suspects were trying to extort them, be verbally abusive, trying to get more money out of them."
Langan says the odd meeting place was an automatic red flag.
"They were concerned about the condition of the dogs as well as the demeanor of the seller. That's not normal for a person selling the dog over the internet wanting to meet you in a parking lot."
After a month of investigation, the Humane Society uncovered and address. Along with the Omaha Police Department, NHS came to the north Omaha home with a search warrant on Wednesday looking for the group and to see the conditions the animals were living in.
After an hour police rammed in the door. They found four people hiding in the attic, behind dry wall.
"Once we determined who they were. 3 out of the 4 had numerous outstanding felony warrants in other states", adds Langan.
Police arrested Gino and Judith Malpartida and Melissa Aguilar-Gonzalez.
NHS seized 9 dogs ranging in size from a Chihuahua to a Great Dane. The animals seemed to be in good shape, but the house was not suitable to live in.
