Omaha, NE -- Authorities say a woman was preying on people, stealing their checks, and trying to cash them.
Police arrested Charity Kray and booked her on 11 counts of Felony Forgery. Police reports say between January and March, she cashed more than $20,000 worth of checks from people in Gretna and west Omaha at banks across the metro. Police say Kray would steal mail with checks from mailboxes, wash the checks, and rewrite them under different names.
Recently Norma Hintz discovered a couple of checks never made to the payee yet she received copies of voided out checks in her bank statement. Instead of the $25 she wrote one check for, it had been cashed for $825.
"I was sad because I thought it was too bad that somebody has to do that, and it obviously was brazen fraud,” Hintz described. "That's what I'm going to do from now on is mail my letters and everything in the postal department box."
Kray is being held on $100,000 bond.
The U.S. Postal Service says bring your outgoing mail to the post office or a local post office box.
