Offutt Cancels August Air Show
Offutt Air Force Base, NE - The annual "Defenders of Freedom" Air Show has been cancelled and the Air Force blames the federal budget and sequestration.
"The Department of Defense and the Air Force are facing difficult fiscal challenges, which requires us to make some tough decisions here at Offutt," says 55th Wing Commander Col. John Rauch.
The air show has been a Bellevue summer tradition since 1972, often drawing 100,000 people for the event, usually held in late August.
Rauch says the decision to cancel was difficult, but necessary, "We understand how important the air show is to the local community and it's equally important for us. We are already looking ahead to when we hope to once again host our air show and open house."
The 2013 air show was scheduled for August 24th and 25th.
