Gabby Giffords has a message for Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley: support universal background checks for gun buyers.
The former Congresswoman and her husband Mark Kelly are urging key senators to support expanded background checks in a new television ad that is to begin airing today in Iowa and Arizona.
In 2011, Giffords was shot in the head in Tuscon, where she was holding an outdoor meeting with constituents. The shooting led to her resignation from the United States Congress.
After the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Giffords and Kelly formed Americans for Responsible Solutions. In the group's TV ad, Giffords speaks slowly about gun violence, "We have a problem, where we shop, where we pray, where our children go to school, but there are solutions we can agree on. Take it from me. Congress must act. Let's get this done."
Giffords and Kelly introduced the commercial last month before the Senate started work on gun control legislation. The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to take up tougher firearms regulations tomorrow. Senator Grassley is a member of the committee.
