Authorities recovered many stolen guns from a northwest Omaha apartment garage, and put a 22-year-old man behind bars. The Douglas County Sheriff's office says it was on high alert until they put the suspect in jail.
Deputies say the weapons were stolen about 3 weeks ago, but a tip led police straight to them. The bust started in the drive-thru at the Taco Bell near 90th and Fort St. Thursday morning. Omaha police locate a vehicle that was stolen during a home burglary near Irvington on February 8th. Because the original crime was in the county, the sheriff's office took over, and booked Billy Russell for Theft, Burglary, and Possession of a Weapon by a Prohibited Person. The Douglas Co. Sheriff's Office seized 20 of 27 firearms stolen from the home.
"There was a considerable number of firearms. There was long guns, there was handguns, amongst the long guns was rifles and shotguns. Some of the rifles were high powered rifles with scopes," said Douglas Co. Chief Deputy Marty Bilek.
Authorities also recovered a large amount of ammunition. They found all of it in the garage of the suspect's girlfriend. She has not been charged. Sheriffs say the original owners, legally owned the guns. Chief Deputy Bilek says they were worried these guns would end up being sold on the black market, and were glad to get the majority of them back.
“We take gun crimes and gun violations very seriously these days,” Chief Dep. Bilek explained. "These days we're very concerned about guns falling in the wrong hands given the number of gun related crimes there have been lately, so we were very anxious to get these guns off the streets.”
Russell is being held on $350,000 bond. The firearms have been returned to their owners.
