Four -Year-Old Left in Day Care Van for Hours

CREATED Feb. 27, 2013

Omaha, NE - James Maxson is outraged by a letter he received Tuesday from Little Lambs day care. It states the day care left his four-year-old daughter, Haylee, in their van "for a few hours".

"That issue should never have happened," Maxson said.

Maxson says he went to the preschool Wednesday for more answers. An employee told him Haylee was inside the van, alone, for five hours. She had wet herself and had no food. Maxson said his daughter was picked up just after 8:30 in the morning. She was on a bus with 12 other kids. While the other kids got off, Haylee sat in the back strapped into the car seat. He says no one noticed her until 2:00 in the afternoon.

"It was like what, 34 yesterday, 35? And that was the high of the day! So, you know I don't know how long she's been sitting in the van wet, no food, no water," he said.

Maxson adds that Wednesday morning Haylee didn't want to get up to go to preschool until James said he would drive her. He says once they got to Little Lamb, she clung to her teachers leg and was afraid to let go.

"I'm worried this is going to affect her later on in life," he said.

KMTV spoke with Sheryl and Dan Godsey, the owners and managers of Little Lamb by phone Wednesday night.

Dan Godsey says they are heartbroken over what happened and are so sorry for the Maxson family. He adds they have a checklist in place and three employees checked off on paperwork indicating they had checked the van Haylee was in.

Godsey says they have fired two bus drivers and an administrator over the incident. When asked if this is the first time a child has been left in a vehicle, Godsey declined to comment.

A quick check with the Better Business Bureau shows Little Lambs has an A+ rating.
