Phones May Be Latest Health Hazard

CREATED Feb. 26, 2013

Omaha, NE - For decades, parent's have said not to stare at the TV, it will ruin your eyes.  In an age where technology is growing faster than ever comes another warning.  Don't stare down at your electronic pocket device, it will ruin your neck.

Everywhere you look someone is looking down, updating twitter or instagram.  Shuffling through iTunes and checking email.  But social media connections may be doing more damage to our health than we realize.  Texting is becoming a pain in the neck.  According to UNMC's Department of Orthopedics, more people are looking down, and they're seeing more neck and spine problems.

"People get so focused on these devices that they end up holding their neck and upper back in abnormal positions for long periods of time," says Chris Cornett, M.D. at UNMC.  Next time you're focused on the tiny computer screen in the palm of your hand, remember, holding your body in an abnormal position can lead to headaches, fatigue and literally a pain in the neck.

Since all this growing technology is fairly new, the long term effects are sill unknown.  However, if your phone has become a pain in your neck, there are simple steps to address the discomfort.

1. Modify the position of the device, find a way to hold your device so you look forward instead of looking down.

2. Take breaks, now that communication is at our fingertips 24-7, bosses can email you any time of the day for the latest on your reports, but it is important to take a break and turn your device on silent or turn it off.

3. Stay fit, next time you hit the gym, stretch and do exercises that will strengthen your neck and back.
