BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: Elderly Man Dies, Wife Critical After Assault, Fire
Omaha, NE - Late Thursday afternoon, police and the state fire marshal were still on scene of a house fire that started around 9:15 a.m. in the Florence area.
As firefighters responded to a fire call, police responded to an assault call at the home on North 33rd and Ernst.
Authorities say the man in the home was assaulted before someone set a fire.
Police identified the victims as Raymond and Elizabeth Vasholz, whose daughter, Beverly Flynn, died in the Von Maur shootings five years ago. Raymond died at Alegent Creighton University Medical Center. Elizabeth is undergoing surgery at St. Elizabeth Burn Center in Lincoln.
KMTV spoke with Dawn Reed, who says her son Terrance Hale,30, was taken into police custody.
Hale was later arrested for murder, burglary and arson.
Reed says she lives around the block from the Vasholz home but has never met them. She said she doesn't know how her son knew them.
She is surprised to hear her son is involved.
"That doesn't sound like him, especially the magnitude that it's playing out to be," said Reed. "Fire, assault, people coding? No."
She says he sings and is a deacon at his church.
