Nebraska Lawmakers Consider Medicaid Expansion

CREATED Jan. 23, 2013

(Lincoln, NE) - Nebraska Lawmakers could expand Medicaid coverage, hoping to reduce health care costs and help the state comply with the Affordable Care Act.

State Senator Kathy Campbell of Lincoln unveiled a proposal Wednesday to expand the program to cover an extra 42,000 residents by the year 2016. The bill says it would give more residents access to preventative care while reducing costs for the state, counties, and hospitals.

Senator Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha says Nebraskans are already paying for the uninsured through higher premiums. He claims the new bill would save Douglas and Lancaster counties millions of dollars for medical assistance programs.

Governor Dave Heineman says expanding Medicaid would drain money from other state priorities.
