New Parking Manager Brings Ideas

New Parking Manager Brings Ideas

By Jake Wasikowski. CREATED Nov 29, 2012

Omaha's new parking manager says changing people's perceptions could be the key to better parking.  Ken Smith let KMTV Action 3 News ride with him as he checked out the area first-hand.

Smith was previously the Parking Manager in Lincoln.  He says the City of Omaha is focusing on parking issues downtown and in the Old Market, right now.

A recent study says Omaha can handle any big event that comes to town for parking, but during peak hours in the Old Market the on-street spaces are at capacity.  A study says of the 41,000 parking spaces only 5,000 are on-street.

"I think it's a process of marketing, pricing, and a lot of things that parking managers do to implement policies that make the whole system work," Smith explained.

The City of Omaha hopes to reduce operating costs by $1.2 million over the next 2-3 years.  They will add credit card meters, and hope to make garages more identifiable and affordable.  Smith hopes drivers will start seeing the changes in the next few months.  The city hopes to have credit card meters put in before next winter.
