OMAHA - A suicidal man wielding a knife is shot by police in a west Omaha neighborhood. Residents can't believe what happened.
It started with a police call to the Edgewater Apartments to check on a suicidal person at around noon on Wednesday. Authorities found him walking the street near 122nd & Burt St. carrying a knife. Police say after making contact with the man, he made his way behind some homes near 124th & Burt St. That's when at least one officer shot him in the grassy area behind those homes.
The 28-year-old man was taken to Creighton University Medical Center. Wednesday afternoon, he was in surgery and still in critical condition.
Police haven't said how many shots were fired, and what provoked the officer to fire. One neighbor who saw the scene unfold says it was scary.
"That was initially what we kind of thought was that somebody was breaking into houses and that's how he got shot. But still it's a little upsetting to know that it's going on in your neighborhood and police were called and that there's a shooting in your own neighborhood, in your own backyard," said Debbie Hilt.
Investigators searched for evidence and spoke with witnesses at the scene for hours.
Police have not released the name of the person shot, only to say he is a 28-year-old white male. The names of the officer(s) involved in this incident haven't been released either.
