Shooting Scares At Westroads & Oak View Malls

CREATED Nov. 23, 2012

Omaha, NE - Omaha police are investigating two black Friday shopping disturbances. The first happened at Westroads Mall just after 1:00 a.m.

Shoppers first thought it was a shooting, but it turns out it was two people fighting. Police say customers likely heard the sounds of trash cans or signs being knocked over during that fight.

No one was hurt, but police did arrest Darrell Richards for Disorderly Conduct.  About two hours later Nicholas Schroeder was arrested for Trespassing, Disorderly Conduct, and Obstructing an Officer.

Shoppers said people were running for the exits, and hiding in the back of stores.  They said employees were quickly shutting store gates.

"It was terrifying." said Lisa Keres, who was at Westroads when the incident occurred.  "All I could think about was my kids and whether they were going to be OK.  And I think I did what any mother would do, I got them out of there."

It took police about 30 minutes to get everything under control.

About an hour later, at Oak View Mall, police got into a scuffle with a shoplifter who allegedly tried to spray mace at store security guards.  Several shoppers called 911 saying they heard shots being fired.  Police believe people started to panic when they heard the commotion, while authorities were arresting the woman.  Chalonda Jenkins was arrested for Shoplifting, Assault, Disorderly Conduct, and Impersonating an Officer.

Police say there was no indication that any shot were fired at either mall.

In December 2009, eight people were killed in a shooting that happened at the Von Maur store in Westroads Mall.
