North High Headed to State Football Playoffs for First Time

Omaha, NE - To the beat of the drum, cheerleaders dance and hundreds of students cheer - excited for the North High school varsity football team.

"it's amazing, I've dreamed about it and now the dream's coming true," North High quarterback Zach Martin said.
For the first time in school history, the Vikings will play in the state football championship game. Monday's game is extra special for Principal Gene Haynes who's been with the school for 26 years. "You saw the enthusiasm that was here you looked at and saw the legends that played here in the 1961 football team state championship and we're proud to have them back," Gene Haynes said. Back in those days, the Omaha World Herald declared the winner based on statistics. Today, those football legends were welcomed out onto the court with a rousing applause.
Alumni Jerry Murtaugh says he couldn't be more excited for the school and north Omaha. "These young kids don't really grasp it right now but when they get old like us it's something that doesn't come around very often," Jerry Murtaugh said.
The team will take on Millard North, who beat them earlier this season. Quarterback Zach Martin is confident they'll pull off the win.
"We''re a great team, we'll have to play really good to beat them. We had a couple of turnovers in the game that we played earleir in the season so if we minus the turnovers we can come out on top."
