Bennington, NE - This may be the perfect place for a mountain lion to call home. Residents around Bennington swear they've seen a big cat. Marty Bilek with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office says, "We're starting to become a little bit more concerned because as the number of calls increase, they can't all be mistaken. There's got to be some legitimacy to it."
Deputies have been fielding calls for more than a week now. The latest reports, two of them Friday morning about a fleeting mountain lion. The thing is, most of the reports have been around schools. Parents are on alert. Karla Scearcy says, "I wouldn't want to see it walking down the street but I think the places it's been spotted has been kind of in the wooded areas near creeks beds and stuff like that."
The sheriff's office says the sightings have been along 156th and old Bennington and Rainwood Road and 168th. All of those areas are wooded, some have creek beds, the ideal location for both human and lion to settle in. Heather Bowman says, "When you build in the country, I mean what do you expect? You have to expect some sort of ramification for what you're living in, your surroundings, your environment." The sheriff's office says if they ever find the elusive lion, they'll deal with it accordingly. They hope they can tranquilize it and move it to another location away from the city.
