NRC Gives OPPD To-Do List at Ft. Calhoun
Omaha, NE - OPPD managers will update the Nuclear Regulatory Commission tonight on steps to restart the Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant.
OPPD set a December date to start reheating the plant; that has now been delayed until next year. CEO Gary Gates told the OPPD Board of Directors Thursday a February restart is planned, but it is a "challenging schedule".
OPPD spokesman Jeff Hanson says the company has made significant progress but will not restart the plant until it is safe. The NRC will give the final go ahead to restart. This week, the agency gave OPPD a 48-page checklist that needs to be completed, included training and equipment upgrades.
Thursday night, the NRC will meet with OPPD and take public comment at Dana College in Blair. The meeting starts at 6:00 p.m.
OPPD shut down the plant for regular maintenance in April 2011. The plant remained closed when the Missouri River flooded and has since been cited for a series of safety violations.
