Friends of Cailey Berndt Say Goodbye

CREATED Oct. 14, 2012

"Probably one of the hardest things I've had to do, is say goodbye to a friend."

Friends of Cailey Berndt pay their respects at the quiet intersection of a tragic accident.

"My heart just dropped, it was unbelievable. I still don't want to believe it really."

"Pieces of Cailey's car are still scattered along these tracks in little Sioux, police say she was heading down this road, she didn't stop for an oncoming train and it hit her."

The impact of the crash threw Cailey's car, with her in it, into a nearby creek.

Rescuers got her out and to a hospital in Omaha, but her injuries, just too severe.

"She was a really good person, everybody's going through a lot. Like everybody cared for her."

The Little Sioux community is shaken. A daughter and a dear friend is gone.

"She'll always be remembered and loved. She was just a great friend and daughter and its just really hard to see somebody that special be taken."

"Everyone is wearing purple."

At her high school in Mapleton, the mood is somber.

"Its a quiet day you know there's many tears and kids that are huddled sometimes, and sometimes they're hugging."

Fellow classmates wear purple, Cailey's favorite color, all to show Cailey will always be remembered.
