Supporters, Critics of Chick-Fil-A To Descend On Restaurants
Thousands of Christians are expected to flock to Chick-Fil-A restaurants around the country today, while same-sex couples are planning protests at the fast food restaurants on Friday.
The events are intended to be mass shows of support by people on both sides of the same-sex marriage issue.
The controversy involving Chick-Fil-As exploded after an interview with the chain's president appeared in the Baptist Press in mid-July. Dan Cathy said: "We are very much supportive of the family--the biblical definition of the family unit."
Supporters of same-sex marriage criticized Cathy, calling his statements bigoted and hateful.
Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee encouraged people to show their support for Chick-Fil-A by eating there Wednesday, August 1st. Proponents of same-sex marriage are asking people on Wednesday to donate the approximate cost of a Chick-Fil-A meal--about $6.50--to gay and lesbian rights groups, and to counter-protest Cathy's stand on Friday.
