PALM DESERT - Democratic congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz's vote on the government shutdown is raising some eyebrows here in the Coachella valley.
The congressman was the only democrat in California to break party ranks and vote with the GOP in favor of a bill that ultimately failed and led to the government shutdown.
A KMIR6 News viewer wants the congressman explain why.
KMIR6 News reached out to the congressman's office in Washington, D.C. His staff sent a statement...which doesn't specifically address how he voted, but appears to try to explain his vote:
"I did not vote to to repeal of relay the Affordable Care Act. I voted to ensure congress participates in the same health care exchanges as all hardworking Americans because I believe that congress should play by the same rules as the people I serve. "
Ruiz's office also put out a statement expressing the congressman's "frustration" with the government shutdown.
Ruiz is the only democratic lawmaker in California to break party ranks and vote for the GOP-backed bill.
