CATHEDRAL CITY - Eight elementary schools in the Palm Springs Unified School District started classes today. The students had four weeks of summer break, and some parents think vacation ended soon.
"I would like for school to be on a traditional calendar instead with a longer summer break," said Obdulvia Santiago in Spanish.
Her son just started kindergarten at Cathedral City Elementary School.
"He didn't even cry. He's happy for school and his new teacher," said Santiago.
Teachers at Cathedral City Elementary explained that year-round is the same as being on a traditional calendar, but vacation time is spread differently.
"The children just when they start to get tired, they have a break and they don't forget everything over the summer. Ten week summer is spread out throughout the year," explained fifth grade teacher, Martha McDevitt.
The rest of the PSUSD schools under the traditional calendar will start on September 3. Classes at Desert Sands Unified School District also start on September 3 according to its website. Coachella Valley Unified School District schools start on August 26.
