PALM DESERT - Fall semester has started at College of the Desert, and many students are already having trouble finding a parking space.
"I drove and I drove and I drove. There is just no parking available," expressed a communications major, Warren Horton.
He says it took him about an hour to find parking Tuesday.
"If they're going to charge me a fee, they'd better have a spot for students to park and in a timely fashion, and that's not the case," said Horton.
The Director of Institutional Advancement, Pam Hunter, reassures students there is enough parking.
"It may not be right outside your door of your classroom, but there is parking on campus. We've been trying to communicate with our students to tell them where parking is available," said Hunter.
She adds it's the start of the semester, so finding a spot might be tough at first. These problems will soon be solved once the new solar-covered parking lot in front of the Cravens Student Services building is complete.
"We're putting shaded structures along the Monterey parking lot, which will provide a significant amount of solar power for the college and reduce our utility bill. It will provide covered parking for students, which is great," explained Hunter.
The lot won't be fully complete until the first week of October, but some students say they aren't affected. They say they just come earlier to their classes to find a parking spot.
"I'm right here in the back, but it was easy. It was empty, so I thought it was easy because I come in the morning," said a first-year student, Crystal Gonzalez.
But horton says he shouldn't have to go through this.
"Why should students drive to an hour in circles, looking for a space to park when we have classes? I shouldn't have to come here at 8:30 or earlier just to find a spot," said Horton.
