INDIO - For many drivers, the road conditions on Date Avenue, in front of Martha's Village and Kitchen, are getting worse.
"That I remember this road has been ugly and the way it is since back in the day when this used to be a drive-in movie theatre. I used to come along this road, and it has always been bumpy," expresses Jaime Bautista, who's lived in Indio for 17 years, "I know it's unsafe for the people traveling in it and stuff."
The damaged road stretches a quarter of a mile between Calhoun and Cypress Streets. It's entire length is filled with cracks and potholes that drivers can't avoid.
"I know people have had flat tires due to the road and the rain hasn't helped lately," says Bautista.
Some people living at the nearby shelter, Martha's Village and Kitchen, say even the sidewalks are so bad they can't use them.
"Sometimes I have to walk down the street because the sidewalks are just as bad. They're all sticking up, broken up and it's messed up four of my strollers," shares Marisa Wallace.
The road is a commercial truck route, which may have a lot to do with the damaged road surface.
"The ice trucks, the towing trucks, we have a lot of the delivery trucks that come in and out. Well, you know that big trucks are a big hazard for these streets. It's a really bad road that needs to be fixed," says Jose Sonico, who lives at the shelter.
Residents of the area hope the City pays attention to their concerns and fixes the street and sidewalks soon.
"Other parts of the city usually have beautiful roads, but when it comes to Indio and Coachella, it's always pretty bad roads out here," says Bautista.
An employee from Public Works in the City of Indio says the City has no local funding to repair Date Avenue between Cypress and Calhoun Streets this year. He estimates the cost to repair it would be about half a million dollars. He adds that they are working on repavement projects in Indio on other major roads such as Madison Street and Highway 111.
