INDIO - Haki Dervishi - owner of "The One Stop Shoppe" in Indio - was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in federal prison for scamming the government out of nearly $4 million in a Food Stamp swindle.
The sentence was handed down this afternoon is a Federal Court is Los Angeles.
According to the Federal indictment, Dervishi, and his employees at The One Stop Shoppe would purchase food stamps from customers for cash at less than face value. For example, the store would pay a customer 50 dollars chase for 75 dollars worth of food stamps. Then Dervishi would redeem them with the government for the full 75 dollars.
Government prosecutors say Dervishi redeemed nearly $4 million in benefits over two years, most of which were purchased for cash.
Dervishi was also ordered to play more than $3.5 million back to the Federal government, along with a $250,000 fine.
