KMIR Staff are 'Principal for a Day' at Cathedral City Schools

By David Reese. CREATED Jan 15, 2014

CATHEDRAL CITY -    IT WAS "PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY" IN THE COACHELLA VALLEY WHERE MANY COMMUNITY LEADERS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHADOW SCHOOL PRINCIPALS AND LEARN ABOUT THEIR EVERY-DAY JOB.

TWO OF OUR STAFF AT K-M-I-R WERE INVITED TO BE PART OF THE PROGRAM...INCLUDING OUR NEWS DIRECTOR DAVID REESE AND OUR REPORTER GITZEL PUENTE.

SHE TELLS US MORE ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE:

IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE VISITING ONE OF THE SCHOOLS TODAY IN THE PALM SPRINGS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT.

IT'S A SIDE YOU DON'T NORMALLY SEE..A CLOSER LOOK INSIDE THE CLASSROOMS..WHAT PRINCIPALS HAVE TO DEAL WITH EVERY DAY..THE CHALLENGES THAT ARISE.

MY MORNING STARTED EARLY AT CATHEDRAL CITY HIGH SCHOOL. I SHADOWED PRINCIPAL GUILLERMO CHAVEZ..HE'S BEEN THE PRINCIPAL AT THE SCHOOL FOR NINE YEARS.

WE INTERACTED WITH SOME STUDENTS AND MADE CLASSROOM VISITS.

AND AT JAMES WORKMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL IN CATHEDRAL CITY... K-M-I-R'S NEWS DIRECTOR DAVID REESE HAD THE CHANCE TO SHADOW PRINCIPAL BRAD SAUER.

THE "PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY PROGRAM" IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE CURRENT EDUCATION SYSTEM..AND ALL THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF BEING A SCHOOL PRINCIPAL.

THE "PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY" PROGRAM WAS FOLLOWED BY A LUNCHEON AND REFLECTION BY THE COMMUNITY LEADERS ON WHAT STRUCK THEM THE MOST DURING THEIR VISIT.
MORE THAN 25 SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED THIS YEAR.

THE STUDENTS BOASTED ABOUT THEIR PRINCIPAL AND THEIR RIGOROUS ACADEMIC PROGRAMS.
