Hospital Employee Behind Bars after Stealing from Patients
BANNING - A woman is behind bars after police say she stole from patients at the hospital she worked at. On a quiet, family street in Banning, Miranda Ruehle watches her kids play on scooters and can't believe one of her neighbors was arrested. "Nothing like that ever happens here. It's a pretty quiet neighborhood,” says Ruehle.
30-year old Kimberly Renee Parks was arrested after police say she stole items like purses, wallets and a camera from elderly patients at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning where she worked. "Several of the victims, they were able to identify people who had access to where the items were stolen,” says Lt. Phil Holder of the Banning Police Department. Police say the initial investigation didn't take long once the victims pinpointed potential suspects. The investigation led them to the 500 block of N. 6th Street. "They contacted her at her residence in Banning and after speaking with her for a while, she admitted to taking the purses from the hospital and bringing them home,” says Holder.
Parks is facing felony burglary charges as well as elder abuse. Police didn't know Parks' official title at the hospital but they do know she was only employed for a short time. "She'd been there for approximately two weeks, so she was relatively new to the hospital,” says Holder. KMIR6 went to the hospital and administrators told us the investigation is ongoing and would not comment.
Reuhle says she works at a local hospital too and says she's never seen any internal theft before and can’t imagine it happening. "I think that's really shocking because I work in the healthcare profession. I am a nurses assistant, so it's pretty shocking,” says Ruehle. Parks is being held in lieu of $5,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned Monday in court.
