PALM SPRINGS - Congressman Raul Ruiz saved an ill man during his flight from Washington to Texas Thursday morning. Congressman Ruiz, who was an emergency medicine doctor before entering politics, said the man appeared to be in his 60s and had a history of diabetes.
"When he passed out, he became pale and diaphoretic, which means cold sweats, I made sure that his airway was patent, that he was breathing and that he had circulation. We put a defibrillator on his chest, and I applied oxygen and made sure had a pulse," explained Congressman Ruiz.
He added that the man lost consciousness twice, and he and a firefighter on board provided medical assistance. The flight was re-routed to North Carolina, where the man received further medical treatment and is believed to be in a stable condition.
