PALM SPRINGS - Modernism week is still a few months away but that didn't stop planners of the event from starting early and letting people in on why modernism can be so fun.
Images of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and vintage cars inspire the cocktail party held at Design 849 in Palm Springs. It's the fall season kick off to Modernism Week which brings in thousands of people in February. "We have bus tours, parties, a few lectures and a bike tour. It's one of these amazing events that we put on in the fall because the weather is so gorgeous and everyone is coming back into town,” says Chairman of the Board for Modernism Week Chris Mobley.
Old style dancing and modern decor weave an intimate portrait of Palm Springs in the 50's and 60’s for this cocktail party. It's a type of decor that started then and is still popular today, especially in Palm Springs. "We've become sort of the home for modernism for what was developed in the mid-century modern period,” says Mobley.
Mobley says Palm Springs is all about outdoor living. "They're designed for outdoor light. You can see the beautiful mountains. You can see the sky and so what really works with the mountains and the color of the sky are really bright colors, so when you walk into somebody's house, you see this magnificent backdrop with pops of color on the inside,” says Mobley.
So if you're looking to decorate, Mobley says choose modern style décor and for the interior design challenged, he says don't over think it. "It’s very simple, form, function with bright pops of color,” says Mobley.
