Border Patrol Foils Meth Smuggling Attempt

OCOTILLO WELLS. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Indio Station foiled an illegal narcotics smuggling attempt during a vehicle stop and seized over 9 pounds of methamphetamine.

The incident occurred yesterday morning, when Border Patrol agents stopped a 28-years-old male U.S. citizen driving a Toyota Tundra. The man was traveling eastbound on Highway 78, one mile west of Highway 86.

Border Patrol K-9 team assigned to the 86 Checkpoint were summoned to the area. The team conducted an inspection which yielded a positive alert on the front area of the vehicle. Agents conducted a more thorough investigation and discovered a bundle of crystal methamphetamine wrapped in black cellophane inside the engine intake manifold compartment.

The crystal methamphetamine weighed 9.48 pounds and had an estimated street value of $303,000.

The man, vehicle and the narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
