CREATED Feb. 8, 2014

THERMAL - 55-year-old, Lavonne Koester, was struck and killed Saturday in Thermal while participating in the Tour de Palm Springs cycling event.

California Highway Patrol says a truck hauling a trailer hit the bicyclist just after noon.

The crash happened at the corner of 60th Avenue and Harrison Street.

CHP says the woman ran a stop sign and rode directly into the truck's path causing the front of the truck to hit the bicycle.

She was taken to JFK Memorial Hospital where she died from her injuries.

CHP said the Tour de Palm Springs is on public roads which are not closed, and riders are required to obey traffic laws.

No arrests were made.
