International Jewel Thief Strikes in the Desert; Appears in Court

THURSDAY UPDATE: Doris Payne just made her initial court appearance inside a courtroom in Indio. KMIR's Angela Monroe is there....and reports Payne waived her right to a hearing because she wants to hire a private attorney. She will return to court Tuesday morning. Nov 5th.
The judge in the case denied media requests for a camera in the courtroom.
PALM DESERT - She's been called one of the worlds most notorious jewel thieves.
Doris Payne, 83, has a documentary, her own wikipedia page, and a major motion picture dedicated to her life.
She has an alleged career of crime spanning 60-years with millions of dollars worth of jewelry stolen.
Her most recent alleged heist, happened right here in the desert. - at a jewelry store on El Paseo in Palm Desert.
Law enforcement says last week, Payne went to El Paseo Jewelers and asked to see several high priced diamond rings.
She allegedly told an employee she would return the next day with a cashier's check to buy the jewelry..
It wasn't until the next day. that employees discovered a ring was missing, worth $40,000.
Payne was arrested yesterday in Pomona while visiting her parole officer.
The Riverside resident is in jail tonight in Banning. She may be arraigned Thursdayy in Indio.
