Desert Hot Springs - Many tenants at Linda Vista Senior Residences on Hacienda Avenue live with dysfunctional appliances like broken doors and garbage disposals, even though they formally complain to the management.
"The stove fan doesn't work, they had an inspection about three months ago, and they said they were going to fix a lot of things down here, but they haven't really done it yet," said a resident, David Mathis.
He says he can't cook properly without setting off his apartment's smoke detector. Mathis adds his tile is also broken.
"Nothing gets done. I don't know, but it just seems like they don't want to spend the money or whatever," said Mathis.
Other residents are also dissatisfied with the maintenance of the complex including broken doors and dysfunctional appliances.
"The garbage disposal I had to unplug it because I was afraid I was going to get electrocuted. It's been about three months and my sink don't work. It's broken. It stinks," expressed another resident, Carol Little.
Outside on the stairs, the concrete is cracked and eroded. Many of the seniors feel it's a safety issue, but when they speak to management about these concerns, they say nothing gets done in a reasonable amount of time.
"She's ordering the part, she's ordering the part, she's gonna fix it, she's chikening out she's going to fix it. That's all I ever hear," said Little.
Many residents, such as Mathis and Little, feel the upkeep of the complex should be better, especially for a senior community. A manager of the complex said she is aware of many of the complaints from the residents, and that management is doing all it can to resolve their concerns.
Also, a spokesperson from the complex's corporate office, Solaris Enterprises, said it handles health and safety issues immediately, and then it addresses all other issues as quickly as possible. However, to some of the tenants, it's not quickly enough.
