THERMAL - A two year old is dead after police say he sustained major injuries in what is being investigated as a homicide. Police are releasing very little information on the death. It happened in Thermal. Neighbors in the 88000 block of Airport Boulevard stare at the many homes on the block trying to figure out where the two year toddler was killed. They say they're in complete shock. "I'm very surprised about this crime. I've never seen anything like it. This is completely new to us,” says a resident of Soto St., a street that runs perpendicular to the 88000 block of Airport Blvd.
Officials are keeping hush as to any arrest or suspect information. Sheriff Deputies say they responded to the area just before 4:00pm Friday night. When they arrived, they found a young boy with severe injuries. "When the deputies arrived, they found a two year old child. He was identified as Jorge Lizarraga and suffered from unexplained injuries,” says spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department Cpl. Angel Ramos.
The victim was rushed to the hospital and later died from those injuries. We now know how that child died. "The coroner has ruled that the child died from blunt force trauma,” says Ramos.
Neighbors say the area is a tight knit community. A community that looks out for one another, but they say no neighborhood is perfect. "We do know each other. We do watch out for each other but unfortunately our houses are not too close to each other. So something could go on next door and we might not know,” says a resident. While they continue to wait for some answers, they hope the family of the victim can cope with such heartache. "I hope they find a resolution to it. Hopefully they can get through this. It's a tragedy,” says a Thermal resident.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the boy's death is asked to contact the Central Homicide Unit at 760-293-3500.
