PALM SPRINGS - Police are searching for "a person of interest" in the death of a 29-year-old local man who was killed in a hit-and-run this weekend. Authorities identify him as Eric Strzelczyk, a former Air Force Sargeant from Bermuda Dunes.
It happened on Sunday morning at 4:30 at the intersection of East Palm Canyon Drive and El Camino Real. Police say the pickup driver was going westbound on East Palm Canyon Drive and was making a left turn when he collided with the motorcycle rider. Police say Strzelczyk was wearing his helmet at the time of the accident. The truck driver fled on foot.
"It was a bloody scene, it wasn't a good scene at all," describes one of the witnesses, Bryon Wetzel.
He was on his way home in Palm Springs and happened to see the "gruesome" scene.
"I was shocked, I mean what can you say, there's a lifeless body in the street and the hit-and-run felon just left the spot," says Wetzel. "He left the car running and just took off. This person didn't even stop, didn't even bother to care for someone he just hit."
The intersection was closed for eight hours yesterday for the investigation. During this time, Wetzel noticed some pool cleaning supplies in the truck, which led him to believe that the suspect works in a pool company. Police haven't confirmed this information yet. It's also still unknown if speed or alcohol were factors in the accident.
"I just think that people need to slow down. It's palm springs, where are you in a rush to? Enjoy the town. You do something like this, you need to do the right thing," says Wetzel.
